History
| The Chesterton Fire Department was established in 1902. It was housed in the old town hall located near the corner of Broadway and Calumet. The department was all volunteer and relied on horse drawn fire apparatus. The department has progressed over the years and has made many changes. In 1961 the department moved from the location of Broadway and Calumet to the corner of 8th street and Broadway. The new station had three equipment bays and currently houses the Chesterton Police department, we moved to our current location in 1977. |

| We have gone from a one fire truck department, to the apparatus we have to day. Along with our equipment growth we have increased our volunteer staff to the current level of 36. In 1976 the town employed three firefighters that worked one per shift, they consisted of two fire fighters and our first career and current chief. Shortly there after the career fire fighters all worked days to cover volunteer shortages. In 1991 the town hired a fourth fire fighter as a career inspector. Currently the town employs twelve career firefighters which work the traditional 24 on 48 off schedule to cover calls. They consist of the Chief, Deputy Chief who is the fire and building inspector, Fire Prevention officer, and three firefighters per shift. Not only has the department had an increase of firefighters and equipment over the years we have witnessed a large increase in calls, Chesterton Fire Department responds annually to an average of 1000 calls. The Chesterton fire department serves the Town of Chesterton, and unincorporated area's of Westchester Township. We also provide mutual aid to fire departments in the area, as well as the Porter Memorial Emergency Medical service. We strive to provide our customers with the best trained, best equipped, and the most professional fire fighting staff with the resources that are currently available. |
